MAIN STREET PEDESTRIAN MALL
Dallas, Texas | Urban Design
The Main Street Pedestrian Mall reimagines downtown Dallas as a bold retail and cultural destination, developed in response to the Main Street District Retail Activation initiative.
More than a park-like corridor, the design establishes a layered infrastructural grid that supports long-term urban resilience. Utilities are organized in accessible linear vaults, while street trees grow in engineered soil cells that maximize root volume, filter stormwater, and protect surrounding systems. Split circulation ensures smooth pedestrian flow, and a modular paving system enables flexibility for outdoor seating, cafés, and evolving storefront experiences.
At its core, a central spine forms a dynamic public realm hosting markets, kiosks, art, wellness spaces, and native plantings beneath shaded canopies. The mall seamlessly connects to the city’s park network and underground tunnel system, advancing ecological performance, commercial vitality, and cultural life.
This model demonstrates how urban districts can integrate infrastructure, green systems, and adaptable public space into a lasting civic asset.
