Set within the expansive landscape of West Texas, this private estate transforms a challenging residential site through a landscape-first approach shaped by landform, planting, and water. The design responds to the exposure, climate, and scale of the High Plains while creating a distinctive outdoor environment through a thoughtful integration of natural systems and human experience.
Sculpted berms formed from nearby soil stockpiles establish privacy and shelter while shaping the experience of the property. The landscape introduces 182 trees, 2,604 native plants, and nearly 1.5 acres of native prairie grasses and wildflowers. Strategically placed tree groves provide wind protection, define outdoor spaces, and frame views, while native plant communities reinforce the regional character of the landscape.
A series of interconnected outdoor spaces extend the architecture into the surrounding landscape. Stone terraces, pathways, porches, gathering spaces, and layered planting create opportunities for recreation, relaxation, and connection throughout the property. Outdoor spaces including a fireplace, swim spa, orchard, pickleball court, half-basketball court, and elevated terrace overlooking the adjacent golf course are integrated into a cohesive landscape experience designed for everyday living. A wildlife fountain provides a habitat element that supports the broader landscape ecology.
Water management is woven throughout the site through careful grading, rain gardens, and irrigation cisterns that capture and reuse stormwater. Together, these systems capture more than 111,000 gallons of rainfall annually while supporting a resilient landscape adapted to the West Texas climate.
West Texas Estate demonstrates how landscape architecture can transform a challenging site into a place that feels both expansive and intimate. Through thoughtful landform, planting, and water strategies, the project creates a private landscape rooted in the character of the High Plains while offering a unique and immersive outdoor experience.
