RMHC MEMORIAL AND GARDEN
Lubbock, Texas | Civic
The Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Southwest sought to create a space of respite, joy, and remembrance for families at their Lubbock location. Surrounded by the University Medical Center, Marsha Sharpe Freeway, and Texas Tech University, open space is limited, making outdoor access essential for families seeking quiet reflection or a place for children to play.
A looping path weaves through the site, connecting gardens, play areas, and a memorial into a cohesive landscape. Curved steel walls gradually rise from the earth to form the memorial wall, guiding families along a gently meandering path with benches for pause and reflection.
The memorial wall features vibrant butterflies, each representing a child’s journey, whether remembered or celebrated. Families choose butterfly colors inspired by hues that naturally attract butterflies. A gateway leads to the butterfly garden, framed by pollinator-rich berms. At its center, a mass of butterfly weed supports a striking Monarch sculpture, honoring the species’ seasonal migration through the region. Outdoor musical instruments encourage children to engage, fostering connection and shared moments of joy.
This project reimagines memorial spaces, blending remembrance with life and hope, creating an environment that supports reflection, resilience, and renewal.
