NATURAL POOL
Abilene, Texas | Residential
Located in Abilene, Texas, this new residence is designed to mirror an existing home, which will serve as a guest house. The placement of these two structures creates an intimate inner courtyard, offering a unique design opportunity.
The client envisions a pool but is mindful of the environmental challenges of maintaining one in an arid climate. To address this, a natural pool is planned—compact to minimize evaporation and designed with a self-sustaining filtration system. Thoughtfully positioned between the two buildings, the pool seamlessly integrates with the courtyard while balancing function and ecology.
On the main residence side, the patio extends directly to the pool’s edge, providing an effortless transition into the water. A wood boardwalk, aligned with the guest house porch, elegantly divides the space into the primary swimming area and the natural filtration zone. A raised water garden initiates the filtration process while serving as a focal point for the adjacent seating area.
For safety and privacy, a lightweight wire mesh fence with climbing vines separates the pool from the guest house courtyard. This subtle barrier ensures protection for young children while allowing the main residence to enclose the pool area as needed.
